Episode 5: Clyde Stubblefield and John Jabo Starks, the Funkmasters Interview – YouTube

Hilarious, those two gentlemen! And I find a great many experiences confirmed through them. In other words: Paid my dues, too – albeit on a much smaller, less significant scale. It’s a business first. How much personal reward you get from it – that’s your personal business.

This is going to be epic! Two of the most influential drummers of all time, John ‘Jabo’ Starks and Clyde Stubblefield, both having earned their reputation on the drum chair with James Brown’s band, narrate their history of Funk drumming, how they met, the times they performed with the godfather of soul J.B. and much more. This documentary piece originates from synchonicity at play and at its best: Norbert Saemann, International Artist Relations Manager at renowned German drums and cymbals manufacturer MEINL as well as his US counterpart Chris Brewer both had the same idea of shooting a documentary video that sheds some light on Stubblefield’s and Starks’ style of drumming and the significant impact it had on Funk in general and James Brown’s signature band in particular. First episode out due in roughly 10 days and kindly brought to my attention via Guido May, an accomplished internationally performing drummer himself with – amongst many more – Pee Wee Ellis and Fred Wesley and in high demand on stages and studios in Europe and abroad. Guido is a proud endorser of Meinl drums and cymbals .
